Clothes
Most women wear a Chadri, which is like a sack over the body with a mesh insert over the eyes and nose. They also wear pleated trousers under a long dress and cover their heads with a shawl.
Before and After
During the rule of the Taliban (1996-2001), women were banned from working or leaving their house without a male relative. If they ever did leave the house they had to be fully covered. When the Taliban was destroyed in 2001, women started going to work and to school. The government doesn't force women to wear the Chadri, and they have even been appointed positions in the government. The Afghanistan constitution states that “the citizens of Afghanistan-whether man or woman has equal rights and duties before the law." Even though there was a change, families are still restricting basic education and participation in public life.
